The archaeological site of Pompeii is a huge area of about 100 acres, a Roman town with many buildings and public constructions buried by ash and pumice rocks erupted by Mt.Vesuvius on 24th August 79 AD.

Pompeii is the only opportunity you have to walk around an ancient roman city, following the roman streets and practically in order to feel as a Roman citizen of 2000 years ago.

The archaeological site of Pompeii has been discovered during the XVIII century, in fact the first discoveries were in 1748 and although so long time went by this excavation work has not been yet completed.

An area of the site is still underground and some already unearthed areas are under restoration works.

Pompeii ruins consist of several Domus and other buildings of public utilities so this is the reason why it needs a good maintenance and surveillance.

Pompeii has become such an important archaeological site to be part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1997.

The time usually spent for the ruins visit is two hours with a professional official guide of the archaeological site.

Eventually you should decide to visit it alone you can plan the timing during the scheduling with the driver, that you will meet coming out of the ruins area; the meeting point will be the same of last drop off.

Continuing your excursion next destination is Mt. Vesuvius , a still declared active volcano.

A climb by car of about 40 minutes from Pompeii to the highest area accessible by car will propose you amazing landscapes and breathtaking views of the bay of Naples.

Your driver is authorized to lead you till the ticket office at the end of the road.

From there you will start a walk along a path in order to reach the highest area and to have a look at the best panorama of all sorrounding area.

The time to spend for the visit is about one and a half hour.

Unfortunately up to Mt.Vesuvius phone network doesn’t work so you need to fix a meeting time with your chauffeur in advance.

This volcano is the last still active volcano of the European mainland. Mt. Vesuvius can be considered the reason for the particular conditions of the around territory.

It has influence for the kind of soil, geographical conformation and lifestyle.

Many local traditions are strictly connected to the volcanic activity and of course also the building technologies adopted in this area are not like the standard ones.

This special condition of soil gives you the possibility to enjoy and appreciate particular wines produced only in this area.

We usual suggest a break for lunch between Mt. Vesuvius and Herculaneum and as we are in a touristic area your chauffeur will suggest you a restaurant we already checked for view and food quality.

After your lunch it is time to proceed to Herculanuem , which is another ruins area, generated and made famous by the same eruption of Pompeii, the one of 79 AD, but it is a different kind of archaeological site.

That is because Herculaneum has been covered by pyroclastic materials and later by mud.

Practically the layer covering the old city is stronger than the one in Pompeii and for these characteristics more difficult to be digged, but it is also the reason why in Herculaneum we had a better preservation than in Pompeii.

The archaeological area in Herculaneum is not so big because of difficulties of breaking the covering rocks and for the position of the new city, right on top of the older one, but it is a good place for catching the smaller details and appreciating the Roman art and civilization.

After the tour of Pompeii, Mt.Vesuvius and Herculaneum you will obtain a deeper knowledge of the Roman world.

Your chauffeur will organize your meeting in order to be back on time and during the drive back there is the possibility to ask him something that could still be interesting to compare his knowledge with yours.
